The Overview
TCB: The Toni Cade Bambara School of Organizing is a documentary film celebrating the life and legacy of Black feminist writer, filmmaker, and cultural worker Toni Cade Bambara. Directed by Louis Massiah and Monica Henriquez, the 105-minute film reconstructs Bambara's story through archival footage and personal testimonies from colleagues and friends. The filmmakers needed a digital home that honored the documentary's vintage aesthetic while serving practical goals: growing their subscriber list, sharing screening information, and making it easy for organizations to host their own screenings.
The Challenge
The documentary was gaining momentum—screening at prestigious venues like DOC NYC, the BlackStar Film Festival, and universities across the country—but lacked a centralized online presence. The filmmakers needed a website that could accomplish three key objectives: capture email subscribers to build their audience, display past and upcoming screening dates, and provide a clear pathway for universities, organizations, and community groups to request their own screenings. The site also needed to reflect the documentary's distinctive visual language—a bold, colorful, vintage-inspired aesthetic that honored Bambara's era and legacy.
The Strategy & ApproachOur approach centered on creating a bold, vintage-inspired website that complemented the documentary's colorful archival aesthetic while prioritizing the filmmakers' two primary conversion goals: email list growth and screening request submissions.
We developed a striking color palette of lime green, warm beige, and deep teal that immediately establishes the film's distinctive identity. The highlighted text treatment—where key words like "Toni Cade Bambara," "Film," and "screening" appear with bright lime backgrounds—serves both a visual and functional purpose: drawing attention to the essential elements that describe Bambara's life and work.
To support email capture, we integrated newsletter signup forms throughout the site—in the homepage hero section, the footer of every page, and as a dedicated section inviting visitors to "Stay updated on all things TCB." For screening requests, we designed a dedicated Host A Screening page with a comprehensive intake form and placed clear calls-to-action across the site directing organizations to submit their interest. This dual-conversion strategy ensures the filmmakers can grow their audience while actively expanding the documentary's reach through community screenings.

The TCB Documentary website launched on January 30, 2026, and delivered immediate results. Within the first 11 days:
1,447 site visits from nearly 1,400 unique visitors
40 new email subscribers
17 screening request submissions
These early numbers validate the dual-conversion strategy—placing email capture forms throughout the site while making the screening request process clear and accessible. The filmmakers now have a growing audience to notify about future screenings and a pipeline of organizations eager to bring the documentary to their communities.
By balancing artistic expression with conversion-focused design, the site provides a digital home worthy of Toni Cade Bambara's legacy—one that invites visitors to learn, subscribe, and bring her story to their own communities.
